“This update on the role of UNITA will concentrate on evaluating its position in Angola, although inevitably some reference must be made to external factors. We will examine the position under two main headings: (a) UNITA’s historical legitimacy as an Angolan nationalist movement and (b) UNITA’s present-day capabilities, both military and civil. Brief comment will also be made on the movement’s role as an actor in this long-running drama.”
