This paper focuses on the process undertaken to negotiate independence for Rhodesia before the formal negotiation on the H M S Tiger and what happened after the negotiations ended. In the first period before the formal process started proposals from Britain was sent to Rhodesia’s government on expectations of the outcome of the negotiations. The British government expected Rhodesia to accept the six principles and if not sanctions will then be enforced. However the Rhodesian government was not at all agreeable to that but where prepared to negotiate further. The talks aboard the HMS Tiger was instigated and both parties met facing difficult decisions as Britain expected a solution to the problem and Rhodesia was not prepared to surrender despite the threat of sanctions. What follows is the proposal for settlement and the discussions that took place around these principles and proposals. The final part of this document is focused on the Rhodesian independence constitution and the amendments made after the meeting on the HMS Tiger.
