Robert I. Rotberg is a senior fellow with CIGI and a fellow with the Woodrow Wilson International Center. Previously, he was the inaugural Fulbright Research Chair in Political Development at the Balsillie School of International Affairs, and the inaugural Fulbright Research Chair at the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs at Carleton University in 2012 and again in 2013.
At CIGI, Robert led two research projects: “South Africa’s Role in Multilateral and Governance Issues in Africa” and “Measuring Governance Effectiveness: National and International Dimensions.” The first culminated in publications by Sage and CIGI, as well as an issue of the Annals of the American Academy of Political and Social Science. The second project has produced a new book, published by CIGI in April 2015, titled On Governance: What it is, What it Measures, and its Policy Uses.
Robert is the founding director of the Program on Intrastate Conflict and Conflict Resolution at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government. He is President Emeritus of the World Peace Foundation. Previously, he was professor of political science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, academic vice president of Tufts University and president of Lafayette College. He is also a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.
Robert’s most recent books are Governance and Innovation in Africa: South Africa after Mandela (2014), Africa Emerges: Consummate Challenges, Abundant Opportunities (2013) and Transformative Political Leadership: Making a Difference in the Developing World (2012). His latest book is On Governance: What It Is, What It Measures and Its Policy Uses (2015).
