“The articles in this volume are based on papers presented at a Conference held at Jan Smuts House, Johannesburg, from 21 March to 25 March 1972. After the introductory chapter, Part One deals with certain basic dimensions of development in eight
chapters and concludes with a ninth chapter on a subject of special relevance to the southern part of Africa, namely the
problems of multi-ethnic societies. The three chapters of Part Two are concerned with international aspects of development.
In Part Three there is an attempt to provide an overall evaluation, and to look at needs for the future. The concerns and viewpoints which emerged during the discussions, regarding both the problems and opportunities, are reflected in the final part of this volume. Brief comments by other
participants are included at the end of each chapter, and in the case of the chapter on multi-ethnic societies a summary of the discussion which took place at the relevant session of the Conference is added.”
