Europe and Japan, as major economic powers in the world, have been playing an increasingly independent role in international politics. This paper gives a picture of the changing power pattern in the world. Although South Africa is not a supplier of oil, it is a source of other important raw materials, and this cannot but have a bearing on South Africa’s international political relationships.
