“This report explores the major factors underlying the violent conflict in Abyei. It aims to contribute to policy relevant
knowledge of the link between resources and
conflict and to propose a general framework for action. It examines the territorial attachment of conflicting groups and establishes a link between intensification of
conflict and the changes in livelihoods resulting from environmental stresses and overexploitation of assets. The report will also examine efforts to demarcate borders and
its potential for solving the problem. It will also explore the peace-building potential of envisioned peace parks in
the ecologically sensitive zone of multiple jurisdictions, Abyei, with focus on the formation of conservation zones in which the sharing of physical space can build and
sustain peace.”
