Bridging the Gulf? Exploring South African Ties with the Countries of the Gulf Region

“This paper examines the nature of current South African ties with the Gulf states — Bahrain, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Iraq and Iran, and identifies areas in which there might be a conflict of interest and subject to ongoing change. It also suggests a number of new strategies for engagement. The debate which we hope will be generated by this article should help focus the attention of the government and the private sector on the opportunities for South Africa that exist in the Gulf region.”
