Community-based Natural Resources Management: Experiences and Lessons Linking Communities to Sustainable Resource Use in Different Social, Economic and Ecological Conditions in South Africa

“This document presents a summary of the lessons that the project feels it has learned
so far. These lessons focus on how community-based nature conservation and
ecotourism can help enhance the livelihoods of rural people in South Africa. They outline some of the opportunities and obstacles that TRANSFORM has identified in working towards this goal, and sum up some of the steps that the project believes have to be taken if sustainable progress is to be made in this sector. Although these lessons are drawn from project experience in South Africa, they
are likely to be relevant to those working on similar initiatives in other countries of the region, and further afield. At the same time, however, they do not try to replicate the more academic, generalised statements
of principles for success in common property resource management.”
