The current conflict in the Democratic Republic of the Congo is a political labyrinth, obstructive and chaotic. The update addresses the conflict in 1960 as well as the 1999 conflict with the Congolese government claiming that external invasions are responsible for the ongoing war. Presently many African countries are faced with civil conflicts of their own and thus prohibits the building of a neutral peacekeeping force. South Africa however is well placed to make a contribution to peacekeeping operations but the risks for South Africa outnumber the positive outcomes of such an operation. Peace in the Congo might likely fail for several reasons and a limited operation might have more success in creating political settlement for the Congo.
