“This paper, by contrast seeks to locate the debate about peace in Darfur within the context of the battle for power in Khartoum. It is argued that the Darfurian insurgency represents a challenge to the hegemony of Khartoum because of its intimate links to the argument about the shape of the modern Sudanese state. In essence, the Darfur conflict emanates from weak and unaccountable governance that affects the entire Sudan.”
