Impact of Structural Adjustment Policy on the Energy Crisis and the Environment: A Gender Comparative Study of Rural and Urban Households

“The major objective of the study was to analyse the impact of the structural Adjustment Programmes (SAP) on household energy among the rural and urban dwellers in Uganda. The study further aimed to ascertain the adaptation strategies of both men and women and their effect on the environment. The result of the study is that the structural adjustment policies on the energy sector enacted by the Ugandan government have had varying effects amongst different categories of the rural agricultural
producers and the urban households. It was therefore found that some households gained while others are still vulnerable. In conclusion, the energy crisis has had a negative impact on the rural than on the urban environment. Women-headed households who have no alternative but to continue to depend on scarce, monetized fuel wood are particularly affected.”
