“The survey demonstrates unequivocally that the landmine problem is predominantly rural. This is of special significance in the Mozambican context, given that 81% of the labour force is employed in the agriculture sector and that this sector contributes 34% of the total GDP. Despite all the possible limitations of the survey such as human error, the fact that mines were not physically located or removed, and the low participation of women, the survey represents an important benchmark against which mine action can be planned and progress measured. It underlines the fact that mine action will remain a central focus area in the intermediate future and will continue to require attention and resources.”
