In order to jointly maximize the attainment of gender equality – the Government of Kenya – launched the ‐ United Nations’ Joint Programme on Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment (JP GEWE) in 2009 in alignment with national policies, strategies and frameworks. JP GEWE brings together 14 United Nations’
(UN) agencies under One Programmatic Framework. A strong platform is provided for the GoK and the UN in order to coordinate and serve the needs of Kenya in the field of gender equality and women’s empowerment. The key result areas of the JP GEWE are, i) Gender Mainstreaming; ii)Gender based Violence; iii) Gender and Governance; iv) Economic Empowerment; and v) Delivering as One. The report provides a comprehensive overview of results achieved in each key result area as well as elaborating on some of the significant contextual issues by describing the changing political and social environment in which JP GEWE operated in 2012. In addition, an overview of the UN’s estimated collective expenditure on the thematic priority areas of the Joint Programme in 2012 is included.
