“This paper examines three key issues: firstly, it seeks to answer the
question as to why there was an unconstitutional change of government in Madagascar. This is in view of the debate around the appropriate qualification
of the way in which Rajoelina ascended to power. Secondly, it will try to fathom
Rajoelina’s rise to power from a DJ to the Mayor of Antananarivo and then to the
presidential palace. These two key issues will set the stage for an examination of the core issues that perpetuate the cycle of political instability in Madagascar. The concluding section then provides some policy recommendations that might contribute to ensuring that Madagascar extricates itself from this vicious cycle and establishes itself as a well-functioning and stable democratic state.”
