Mainstreaming or Maneuvering? Gender and Peacekeeping in West Africa

“The aim of this study is to evaluate the roles and impact of Gender Advisors (GA) and gender mainstreaming strategies in UN Peacekeeping missions, with specific reference to Sierra Leone and Liberia as case studies. These countries and missions are selected because the mandate of the United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL) was adopted before Security Council Resolution 1325 on women, peace and security was passed, hence only vague references to women and gender issues are made. The study addresses two broad questions. First, has resolution 1325 impacted UN peacekeeping missions at an operational level and if so, how? Secondly, what effect does having an Office of the Gender Advisor (OGA) situated within a peacekeeping mission have in the planning, implementation, and monitoring of resolution 1325?”
