“The first objective was to lay the foundation for greater cooperation between the African Union (AU) and the ICC. The second, and related, objective was to highlight the problems and politics (both domestically within African states and regionally within Africa) of prosecuting
international crimes. The idea was to identify critical areas where national criminal justice officials are likely to need support/training in investigating and prosecuting international crimes. Africa has already demonstrated a clear commitment to the ideals and objectives of the ICC: more than half of all African states (28) have
ratified the Rome Statute, and many have taken proactive steps to ensure effective implementation of its provisions. In addition, participants of the symposium identified clear initiatives that can be taken to enhance the prosecution of international crimes and end impunity for serious crimes in Africa.”
