In this brief report, Dr RW Bethlehem says that it is neither possible to talk about international pressure without dealing with domestic issues, nor possible to talk, in present circumstances, about economics without also getting involved in politics. He gives the South African Government options on sanctions they face, the costs of the sanctions and the cost of compliance. He also gives options for the Corporate Sector stating that at present black participation in the business sector is minimal and a breakthrough in this regard is needed urgently. He concludes by saying that if the battle continues along present lines, the only certain outcome will be irreparable damage to the South African economy, and it is the economy, alone, which offers the only real hope for the future.
