“This paper provides an evaluation of the six-month detached duties programme and makes recommendations for its enhancement. The evaluation resulted from two qualitative surveys conducted by Institute for Security Studies researchers among the detached police officers;interviews with the officers in charge at the border posts and at the Border Police Head Office; and observations made during two field trips to the border of northern KwaZulu-Natal. The aim of these field trips was to ascertain whether the border police assigned under the new six-month detached unit system were enhancing border control in South Africa or not. “
