The paper speaks about Southern Africa and that ‘African leaders have not given up hope; they are not resigned to becoming a permanent, peripheral backwater which the dynamic parts of the world simply ignore and from which they increasingly disengaged.’ He then speaks on why South Africa is a land of hope. ‘There are great men and women in the Third world as well, but they seldom have the same opportunity to shape their times. South Africa is richly endowed with great men and women in its political, cultural, religious and economic life. They have built political movements, corporate giants, labour unions, churches, newspapers, and marvels of engineering.’
