The Growth of Marine Fisheries Eco-Labelling in Southern and Eastern Africa: Potential Benefits and Challenges

“This policy brief is based on a Norway-funded United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) project on ‘Promoting Sustainable Trade, Consumption and Production Patterns in the Fisheries Sector’. Eco-labels try to promote the consumption of sustainably caught products as opposed to the unsustainably caught ones. However, there is insufficient evidence to suggest the growth of voluntary eco-labelling initiatives is succeeding in this regard there is a lack of empirical studies measuring the impact of eco-labels on consumer markets.”
