The Security Sector in Southern Africa

“The case studies in this monograph begin to close the gap by sketching the political environments that are operative in the selected countries; outlining the
constitutional clauses and policy and legal frameworks that govern the security sector; providing an overview of the security actors; identifying the mechanisms and capacity for independent oversight and accountability; and examining the role that civil society plays in monitoring this sector. Each case study concludes with an identification of the key challenges in the security sector that then present points of entry for SSR measures.”
