“Knowledge has become the driving force in current economy and the essential source of competitive advantage. In sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), there are a number of players involved in knowledge production and dissemination mainly through training and research. Although universities have traditionally played a primary role in leading and providing training and
research in many SSA countries since post-colonial period, the emergence of think tanks on the global scene is changing the dynamics within which knowledge is generated at national, regional, and international levels. The politics of power, economic circumstances and external
influences have shaped the emergence, growth and operations of both universities and think tanks in many countries. This has been further enhanced by the attainment of independence and introduction of structural adjustment programmes.”
