After several months of debate about the withdrawal of French troops in Mali, the President of the Republic, Emmanuel Macron, has finally decided to put an end to it by announcing on Thursday 10 June the end of Barkhane. The operation, which was set up in August 2014, was until then the largest external operation of the French army. It brought together 5,100 soldiers whose main mission was to curb the violence of groups in the Sahel-Saharan strip. However, despite this operation, armed terrorist groups continue to operate in the Sahel. Worse still, some of their actions now target the coastal states of West Africa, as shown by the recent attacks on Ivorian military positions in northern Côte d’Ivoire. / Après plusieurs mois de débats autour du retrait des troupes françaises au Mali, le Président de la République, Emmanuel Macron, a finalement décidé d’y mettre un terme en annonçant le jeudi 10 juin la fin de Barkhane. Ladite opération qui avait été mise en place en août 2014, était jusqu’alors, la plus importante opération extérieure de l’armée française. Elle réunissait 5100 soldats qui avaient pour principale mission d’enrayer la violence groupusculaire dans la bande sahélo-saharienne. Cependant, malgré ce dispositif, les groupes armés terroristes continuent de sévir dans le Sahel. Pire encore, certaines de leurs actions visent désormais les Etats côtiers de l’Afrique de l’Ouest comme en témoigne les récentes attaques des positions militaires ivoiriennes dans le nord de la Côte d’Ivoire.
