The rise of the middle class in emerging democracies is an important global issue. An expanding and large middle class
is vital for inclusion and stability, especially in developing countries with many poor and excluded people. However,
comparative research on this phenomenon from within developing countries has been rare. The aim of the workshop was to start a conversation about middle classes in emerging democracies. By learning from India, Brazil, and South Africa we can get a better sense of which processes and policies have most effectively promoted middle class growth, the most sustainable ways to lift people out of poverty and into the middle class, and under
what circumstances middle classes are most likely to promote democracy and inclusive
growth.
