Future Climate for Africa (FCFA)

Future Climate for Africa (FCFA) aims to generate fundamentally new climate science focused on Africa, and to ensure that this science has an impact on human development across the continent.

FCFA is a multi-consortia programme implemented by five international research teams working across Africa:

AMMA-2050 (African Monsoon Multidisciplinary Analysis 2050)

AMMA-2050 improves understanding of how the West African monsoon will be affected by climate change in the coming decades and helps West African societies prepare and adapt.

FRACTAL (Future Resilience for African Cities and Lands)

FRACTAL improves scientific knowledge of future climate trends in Southern Africa, deepens urban policy-makers’ understanding of how climate change will affect water and energy services, and supports them to explore climate-resilient development choices.

IMPALA (Improving Model Processes for African Climate)

IMPALA delivers a step change in understanding African climate processes and improving continent-wide prediction of climate on the 5-40 year timescale. This includes the development of the first 4.5×4.5km convection permitting resolution climate simulations for an African-wide domain.

HyCRISTAL (Integrating Hydro-climate science into policy decisions for climate-resilient infrastructure and livelihoods in East Africa)

HyCRISTAL develops new understanding of climate change and impacts in East Africa, working with the region’s decision-makers to manage water for a more climate-resilient future.

UMFULA (Uncertainty reduction in Models for Understanding Development Applications)

The UMFULA project (meaning “river” in Zulu) provides new insights and more reliable information about climate processes and extremes in Central and Southern Africa. UMFULA partners with agencies and universities in Tanzania and Malawi to link the information to development decisions with long-term consequences.
