In May 2015, the Centre for Conflict Resolution (CCR), Cape Town, South Africa, brought together 30 mostly African policymakers, academics, and civil society actors to assess the major obstacles to peace, security, and governance in the Great Lakes region and to craft effective and credible policies and strategies to overcome these obstacles. The meeting focused, in particular, on the challenges faced by the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC); the problems of, and prospects for, stability in Burundi; the roles of Rwanda and Uganda in the region; the influence of regional actors such as South Africa, the Southern African Development Community (SADC), the East African Community (EAC), the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR), and the African Union
(AU); as well as the role of external actors such as the United Nations (UN) and the European Union (EU).
