This paper focuses on the economic aspects of South Africa as a supplier of strategic minerals to the Western world. It furthermore describes the importance of the railway system in South Africa and the value of the Cape Sea Route for transportation. However with apartheid still part of the political situation external threats have an influence on the economic development of South Africa and the changes internally are lagging behind the expectations of the black population.
